As we turn the calendar from one year to the next, we often recall what happened over the last year, and look forward with expectation to the new. In the Bible, God encourages this kind of thinking about spiritual things.

Jesus said, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End” (Revelation 22:13). Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and Omega is the last. This reminds us how God is faithful to His promises from beginning to end, how His love for us never weakens. We can be confident that God will love us forever.

Psalm 111:1-10 talks about pondering God’s glorious and majestic deeds, remembering how the Lord has been compassionate, and especially how our faithful and trustworthy God redeemed us (paid the penalty for our sin), and how He remembers His promises forever.

The same Isaac Watts who wrote the beautiful Christmas hymn “Joy To The World” also wrote a hymn based on Psalm 90:1-17. The last verse of that hymn proclaims: “O God, our help in ages past, Our hope for years to come, Still be our guard while troubles last, And our eternal home.”

May we never forget that God’s love for us never fades. God is faithful from beginning to end.
