Our Ascended Lord rules all things! From his throne in heaven, he dispenses grace, mercy, and gifts to his people. These gifts prepare us for “a work of service.” (That phrase at the end of the reading is actually in the singular, reminding us that all that we do in our lives is a singular act of service to God.)
Paul reminds us of the blessings we receive because Jesus has returned to heaven in Ephesians 4:7-12: "But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. This is why it says: 'When he ascended on high, he led captives in his train and gave gifts to men.'(What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower, earthly regions? He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up."
How has he blessed you? You have unique and important gifts to be used in your life of Christian service to others. Your Lord Jesus, who reigns in heaven, has given you those gifts. As you remember Jesus’ Ascension, remember his gifts and grace to you. Use them faithfully in your calling as his child.
